Our world is changing in unprecedented ways and the seismic shifts already underway in the healthcare field will continue to affect us all. Unfortunately, many nurses – from the expert to the novice – are leaving the field.

And yet, if healthcare is to evolve into something that truly serves the well-being of all, including nurses, then the untapped power, strength, wisdom, and clarity of individual nurses as well as the field of nursing itself is desperately needed.

To access this, nurses need to grow themselves as leaders. They need to call forth their unique gifts and talents and cultivate their innate capacity to lead, whether that's at the bedside or in the boardroom.

If you feel a deep devotion to and passion for the art and practice of nursing yet wonder what's next for you as a nurse, then you're what we call a Leading Edge Nurse. You're hungry to become the nurse you're called to be, to make real the vision that propelled you into this sacred profession in the first place. You're ready – whether you're consciously aware of it or not – to grow yourself as a vital step in the larger process of transforming nursing and the way healthcare is done in our culture.

In the Four Shields of Leadership for Nurses, we gather in a community of nurses who recognize that being a nurse involves being a leader – whether that be as a staff nurse, a nurse manager, or a nurse executive. Over the course of four days, we'll explore the Four Shields of ourselves as nurses – the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of how we show up as leaders within our nursing practice.

Through exploring the interplay of these four Shields, you'll loosen the grip the old way has on you and create a spaciousness for something else to emerge. You'll connect more fully to the truth of who you are and tap into the rich inner wisdom that informs the kind of visionary leadership so necessary in our current health care crisis.

Each day we'll go out onto the land to explore the Four Shields of a nurse's leadership and open ourselves to the teachings offered by nature. In the same way that the mirror hanging on our wall at home reflects back to us an image of how we physically appear to the world – an image that we cannot see on our own – our interaction with nature acts as a mirror to reflect back to us the many ways we engage with and participate in the larger world, on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels.

Through the sharing of your sacred stories, you will be seen by others and in turn see yourself in ways you may never have before. Many have said this experience of being truly seen for who they are was incredibly healing and empowering.

The retreat will begin at 8:00 a.m. on a Monday morning, although we encourage participants to arrive the previous evening so they have plenty of time to get settled. We'll end by 3:00 p.m. on the following Friday afternoon and, as much as possible, we'll spend our time outdoors. After a brief opening introduction and setting of the context on the first morning, we will move into clarifying our personal intentions for the program. Over the course of the retreat, we'll explore how we show up as leaders in the context of our current nursing practice and the interrelationship of the four Shields to our unique leadership style. We'll cycle through each Shield as follows:

  • Introduction to the Shield
  • Solo time in nature immersed in and experiencing the Shield
  • Sharing and mirroring of Shield stories
  • Reflective time
  • Interactive group discussion connecting it all back to leadership

On Thursday afternoon, we'll begin our integration process. During this time, each participant will take their experiences in each of the Shields and weave them together into a whole Shield system. Doing this allows us to see where we are strong in our Shields, where we are less developed, and what we might need to do to bring about greater balance. We'll close with an incorporation process on Friday in which we identify ways to anchor our new learning and insight into our work as nurses.

Participating in this retreat will help you fuel your inner fire and infuse your life and your work with purpose, vision, clarity, and direction. You'll leave the retreat inspired to take action on behalf of whatever vision you carry, action that will bring your outer professional life into far greater alignment with your inner knowing. This transformation will then ripple out into your particular sphere of influence, positively impacting your patients, colleagues, and work environment. Past participants of this program have said that it has been both personally and professionally life changing.
